Mallinckrodt: Student Union or Stage? Why not Both?

An exhibit exploring Mallinckrodt's historical consistency and variety in providing student resources and opportunities for engaging in the arts. Built in 1971, the Mallinckrodt Center was originally called the Student Union and Performing Arts Center (SUPAC).

Although Mallinckrodt, its surroundings, and its services have been updated and changed over time, it has maintained the important dual role of serving both as a center for student life and as a venue for the performing arts.

Over the years, new facilities like the Danforth University Center have taken over some of the student services functions. Despite this, the building has consistently remained a gathering place for students, blending social interaction. Mallinckrodt stands as a reflection of WashU’s commitment to fostering community and culture, all in a single building. It serves as a model for university buildings that share the goal of providing their students with a variety of resources in one place.
